Irish Film Festival 18.-24.9. Niagarassa
Irish Film Festival Tampereella 18.-24.9.2009. Arthouse Cinema Niagarassa esitetään viikon aikana irlantilaista elokuvaa yhteistyössä Irlannin suurlähetystön, Irlannin Filmi -Instituutin, Reel Irelandin ja Pirkanmaan elokuvakeskuksen kanssa. Irlantilainen elokuva on vuosien aikana noussut maailmanmaineeseen ja Irlannin elokuvaviikkoja järjestetään nykyisin kaikkialla maailmassa.
Tampereelle saapuvat vieraiksi ohjaajat Leonard Abrahamson ja Martin Dwan sekä historioitsija Gordon Ledbetter.

Leonard Abrahamson: ADAM & PAUL
Friends since they were small boys, Adam and Paul - and we never learn which is which - have withered into two hapless, desperate Dublin junkies, tied together by habit and necessity. A stylized, downbeat comedy, the film follows the pair through a single day, which, like every other, is entirely devoted to the business of scrounging and robbing money for drugs.
The difference today is that Adam and Paul - already near rock bottom - have finally run out of luck, credit and friends.
Stylistically, 'Adam & Paul' is a cold, contemporary take on classic, physical comedy. Thematically, it is a minimal fairytale about two baffled, vulnerable children in the grip of forces too powerful for them to handle; vulnerable, lost, sometimes pathetically optimistic, but always profoundly damaged. 'Adam & Paul' is not a film without hope; it is a tender, unsentimental and very funny testament to the persistence of the human spirit in even the most damaged and marginal of people.

Jim Sheridan: MY LEFT FOOT - THE STORY OF CHRISTY BROWN
MY LEFT FOOT is the true story of cerebral palsy victim, Christy Brown. Paralysed from birth, Brown (played by Hugh O'Conor as child and Daniel Day-Lewis as an adult) is written off as retarded and helpless. But Christy's indomitable mother (Brenda Fricker) never gives up on the boy. Using his left foot, the only part of his body not afflicted, Brown learns to write. He grows up to become a well known author, painter, and fundraiser, and along the way falls in love with nurse Mary Carr (Ruth McCabe). There's no sugarcoating in My Left Foot: Brown, a heavy drinker, was by no means loveable. Day-Lewis and Fricker both won Academy Awards for their performances, and the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Also notable are the late Ray McAnally in his next-to-last film role as Christy's father, and venerable Cyril Cusack as Lord Castlewelland.

John McCormack was one of the finest lyric tenors of the 20th century. A colossus of his time, he was matched only in celebrity by his great friend the Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso. This entertaining and informative documentary explores McCormack's remarkable life and his phenomenal career. John McCormack, THE PEOPLE´S TENOR succeeds in placing the tenor in his proper context as one of the greatest musicians Ireland has ever produced and the world has ever seen.
In 1930, McCormack was paid $500,000 (an enormous sum at the time) to appear in his first talking Picture
SONG O´MY HEART This nostalgic drama follows a disconsolate concert singer retiring to rural Ireland. The unexpected return of his childhood sweetheart, whom he then tragically loses again, inspires him to come out of retirement for one last time in a concert film that delighted McCormack's millions of fans.

Along their journey they meet and collaborate with musicians ranging from Grammy award winners to nomadic herders, culminating in a unique performance in the world's most remote music festival - 'Festival au Desert'.

Is there a place in the world for Yu Ming? He's a clerk at a convenience store in China, bored with his life. At a library, he spins a globe and stops it with his finger, which turns out to be touching Ireland. He reads about the country and teaches himself Gaelic, flies to Dublin, and finds to his chagrin that no one understands him. He assumes that his Gaelic is at fault, that is, until he walks into a bar looking for work.

How does life measure up for a 13-year old girl?
Dublin 1979. The Northside. Maeve Brennan gets up and puts on her first bra. The summer holidays beckon for Maeve and her trio of friends, Ruth, Orla and Claire. But they still have to suffer the indignities of the vigilant Sister Una as she patrols the school for latecomers. At home, the put-upon Maeve washes her bra and fears it's already lost its luster…until an encounter with Brian Power, the local heart-throb, sets her on a collision course with her friends. Ruth needs her support when her estranged father wants to meet her, but Maeve is torn when Brian asks her to the Grove, the local club. It's Clery's clock vs. the Grove… Is Maeve woman enough to make the right choice?
